Our Story
Located in Belfast, Maine, OPAL is a nationally recognized leader in ecological building design, known for design excellence, technological and material innovation, and an encompassing approach to sustainable architecture across varied project types. Since the firm’s founding, our core mission is to envision through design ecologically beneficial environments, centering our clients’ goals and values.
Our approach embodies Maine’s culture, its shared legacy of resourcefulness, its sense of place, and its connection to and dependence on the native environment. This commitment has resulted in measurable impact: OPAL is one of only 27 practices out of roughly 70,000 in the United States meeting the AIA’s targets for an 80% reduction in building emissions across our entire annual project portfolio, a benchmark we have achieved for several years running.
Our work has produced numerous milestones, including the first certified Passive Houses in Maine, Connecticut, and Michigan, as well as the first and only certified Passive House laboratory in North America for the University of Chicago. OPAL’s projects have received numerous awards from the American Institute of Architects at the state and regional level.
Our Services
We work with ecologically-minded clients across a range of building typologies, and with other designers and construction teams seeking sustainability expertise. Whether you are building a home, advancing an institutional building, or integrating performance goals into a project already underway, we bring the same commitment to design excellence.
-
Designing a home is a significant and long-term endeavor. We approach the process as a close collaboration with our clients. Every project begins with an in-depth conversation to understand your vision, then evolves through a process that carefully balances site, program, and budget considerations. We integrate building performance modeling, energy systems, ventilation, and solar integration from the outset so that high design and high performance are always resolved together.
Our aesthetic is rooted in the elemental quality of Maine’s landscape and the spare, climate-responsive forms of its traditional architecture. We hold that minimalist line: monolithic forms, natural materials, and a restrained palette that deepens the relationship between building and environment.
-
We understand that a building project is a reflection of an institution's identity, its existing character, and its vision for the future. We work closely with clients to express that identity through design, while carefully meeting program, schedule, and budget goals. Through early feasibility and pre-design services, we help institutions develop clear project roadmaps that set the foundation for a successful outcome.
Sustainability is central to our institutional practice. We set project-specific performance goals and bring a rigorous, data-driven approach to every project, including energy modeling to assess operational energy use and life cycle analysis to evaluate total carbon footprint. With this foundation, institutions can demonstrate accountability to their values and invest in renewable energy and carbon mitigation strategies with clarity and confidence.
-
OPAL offers sustainability consulting grounded in real-world building experience and advanced performance strategies. Our team includes Certified Passive House Designers, LEED-accredited professionals, and specialists familiar with a range of sustainable building frameworks.
We work with architects, developers, contractors, and other design professionals to integrate sustainability into projects at any stage. Whether the goal is net-zero energy, embodied carbon reduction, or certification support, we provide clear, data-driven guidance tailored to each team’s goals and constraints.
